Defra and Natural England are extending availability to apply for flood prevention grants in response to required actions outlined in Flood Action Plans in response to the storms in Dec 2015.

Flood Prevention Grants

The flood prevention grants are part of the Countryside Stewardship Facilitation Fund with up to £720,000 available to encourage groups of farmers, foresters, and other land managers to develop natural flood management defenses on their land.

The flood prevention grants are available in areas where the Farming Recovery Fund was available after the floods:

  • Cumbria
  • Lancashire
  • Greater Manchester
  • Northumberland
  • County Durham
  • Yorkshire

Application for the flood prevention grants is competitive and to be in with a chance farmers, forrester’s and landowners will need to offer maximum potential for flood prevention and management.

The (NFM) Natural Flood Management provide information and resources to educate about best practices in natural flood management and causes of flooding.

To be considered for the flood prevention grant proposed projects must cover 2,000ha and involve at least 4 holdings. There may be exceptions for smaller areas in exceptional circumstances. The grant covers 3 years of funding.

To be considered for the flood prevention grant applicants need to contact Natural England via the Natural England helpline. Applicants are required to attend briefing sessions with Natural England area team staff prior to submission of their final applications.
