Arable Farming

Arable farming has high water due to crop spraying.

Climate change and increased demand are putting a lot of pressure on the availability of mains water and yet 83% of farms, inclusive of arable farming still solely rely on a mains water supply.

This is quite an alarming fact considering farms are well equipped to utilise their own water solution incorporating rainwater harvesting, water treatment, and water pumps. Rainwater harvesting can be fitted to the roofs of barns and outbuildings.

Arable farming accounts for over 42% of all water usage

“The total volume of water used in agriculture, through mains water use and direct abstraction, is around 180 million cubic metres (m 3 ) per year (Defra, 2011). Irrigation of field crops accounts for 42% of this total, followed closely by drinking water for livestock at 40%.”

Increasing cost of mains water

Although of course there is an initial outlay, this in future could make the requirement for mains water minimal or indeed obsolete to the arable farmer. Considering the huge requirement for water required in arable farming, and the future scarcity due to demand, which will inevitably push up the cost.

Investment in water management is immensely worthwhile and will save costs in a short time due to the water usage necessary to arable farmers.

Rainwater harvesting can be incorporated into farm buildings, collecting rainwater from the roofs of outbuildings. A water pumping system and piping is incorporated to suit the needs of arable farming and distribute the water to where it’s needed.

Water Treatment

A Chlorine Dioxide Water treatment will ensure that the water is the quality required for crop irrigation. Chlorine dioxide is effective at lower concentrations than other disinfectants.

Water Use in Arable Farming

Sprinklers use 180 gallons of water an hour / 14 litres of water a minute

1 – 2 taps at 20 psi / low pressure = 600 gallons an hour / 45 litres a minute

3 – 4 taps at 20 psi / low pressure = 1000 gallons an hour / 75 litres a minute

Water Management

Agrismart offers agricultural water management tailored to arable farming. Our water management specialists offer a no obligation site survey to establish the best solution for your farm.

Water Management

Zero Energy Pump – If you have a water supply on the farm it may be possible to offer a zero energy pump to eliminate or minimise the need for a mains water supply.

Zero Energy Pump

Rainwater harvesting – With an integrated pump system is another option available for those without a water source on their farm. Recycling rainwater that falls on your barns and outbuildings.

Rainwater Harvesting

Water Treatment – Clean water is essential for disease prevention and for better meat production and breeding. Bacterial infection can build up in your water tanks and troughs and without filtration to purify the water supply your animals are at risk of disease or at least loss of condition.

Water Treatment

Stormwater Management – We have a range of stormwater management solutions adapted to your needs to reliably remove harmful pollutants from stormwater runoff.

Heavy Duty Bladder Tanks – Industrial grade bladder tanks now available which are a cheaper alternative to the MDPE vertical water tanks

Bladder Tanks

Fire Prevention & Control – On-farm water supply that can be used by fire engines is critical in fire prevention and control, to minimise the fire spreading and damage that can cause.
